Description
Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). "Blue Pillow" oil on board, n.d. Hand signed at center of left side. A vision in blue, this striking painting by Jon Zahourek presents a gorgeous nude woman lying upon a royal blue pillow, with her beautiful visage gazing upon her nested hands and her long, voluminous tresses cascading toward the nape of her back. The woman's lower body is dramatically turned so as to reveal her voluptuous buttocks, shapely legs, and pretty feet. All is delineated in a bold palette - shades of peach, creamy beige, sky blue, cobalt, and white - with Zahourek's characteristically expressive brushwork - merging the figurative with abstraction. Zahourek's artistry and passion for his process is palpable. Zahourek himself has described his creative method as somewhat organic and dissociative. In his words, "Paintings and drawings and sculpture were all a surprise. The kinesthetic mind was doing the artwork, not the conscious mind." Size of sight view: 23.5" L x 35.5" W (59.7 cm x 90.2 cm) Size of frame: 30.5" L x 42.75" W (77.5 cm x 108.6 cm)
In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
