Description
Hortense Ferne (American,1885-1976) Painting. Title - Man In Bonnet. Oil on canvas painting depicts a Native American Indian Chief in full eagle-feather warbonnet. Signed lower left Ferne ‘35. Label on reverse reads: Artist - Ferne, Hortense Title: Man In Bonnet. Inscribed on top reverse - Chingachgook, Lenape (translation Big Snake, Native American Chief). He was the lone Mohican Chief in James Fenimore Cooper's book Last of the Mohicans. Painting measures 50 inches high, 40 inches wide. Hand carved gilt Newcomb Macklin style frame with perpendicular corner splines measures 58.5 inches high, 48.5 inches wide. In good condition with craquelure.

From Askart.com: Hortense Ferne (1885-1976) is one of the women whose work during the first half of the 20th century helped pave the way for later women artists who are now even more famous than she. Ferne was born in New York City and studied with Charles Webster Hawthorne and William Merritt Chase, whose influence can clearly be seen in her work. She is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Smithsonian, and many other museums and galleries. In l975 she was honored by the National Association of Women Artists in recognition of her dedicated service to that organization, and for her contribution to our country's culture.
