Description
This is a wood block on paper. The Folk-artsy and vibrantly colorful prints available on this website are not reproductions but are hand-printed originals crafted by Pennsylvania artist Mary Hamilton (pictured with Zena, a subject in many of her prints) from a single block of linoleum by the process of reduction. Mary carves and prints the blocks herself in small edition sizes of 60 or fewer. The reduction process guarantees that no more will ever be made of that image. After a color is printed, that part of the block is cut away; the next darker ink is applied and printed; the block is carved again until all that is left on the block is the area of the final color. She cannot go back to change colors or to make more prints. Mary uses oil based inks for their archival qualities and prints on Fabriano or Arches papers. The prints sold on this site are matted with an acid-free colored mat board and an acid-free foam core backing. Some are available framed with black painted wood frames and glass, ready to hang. The dimensions indicate if the print is matted or matted and framed.
