Yukon Gold Rush Nugget Watch and Chain
Item Details
Description
This lot includes a Waltham pocket watch, a chain made of gold nuggets mined by Carl H. Ramquist during the Yukon Gold Rush, Ramquist's leather gold nugget pouch, an original photo by Yukon Territory photographer Frank E. Wolfe of Ramquist and fellow miners at his claim in which he is wearing the watch and chain, a copy of a letter that Ramquist had sent home in 1903, a souvenir book from Dawson City with notations made by Ramquist, 2 postcards sent from the Yukon, and a copy of a black & white photo of Ramquist with his parents and siblings shortly after his return from the Yukon, wearing the watch and chain. Carl H. Ramquist emigrated from Sweden at the age of 3 with his parents in 1887 settling in National Mine Minnesota. As a young boy he worked underground in the mines. In 1902 at the age of 18, tired of working for $1 a day, Carl headed to the Yukon Gold Rush to find his fortune. With minimal success he returned back to National Mine Michigan and married in 1905. He continued to work in mines eventually losing an eye in an accident. Moving to Beloit Wisconsin he tried his hand as a garage owner, a grocery store owner, and a farmer and passed away in 1933 at the age of 49. This grouping has been handed down and comes direct from Carl Ramquist?s descendants and is being offered here for the first time. The watch is an 18 size 17 jewel, lever set, side wind movement made in 1902. It is mounted in a Keystone rolled gold plate hunter style case with floral design and CR engraved on the front cover. The chain is made of 20 small linked nuggets and one large pear shaped hanging nugget in quartz matrix. In its entirety this 18" chain consists of 82 grams in total weight. The button hole bar on the chain is marked J.L. Sale & Co. J.L. Sale & Company was a jeweler on Front Street in Dawson City, Yukon Territory. The leather nugget pouch has holes at the top for a drawstring (not present) and a snap closure. It measures 5" tall, 4" wide. The 8 X 10 B&W photo mounted on board by Wolfe Photo Dawson Y.T. shows Ramquist and 3 fellow miners at their claim marked ?Above Discovery Bonanza Creek?. In the photo, the watch chain is visible. The letter is an old photocopy of the original. It is written by Carl Ramquist in 1903 to a cousin on souvenir stationery. In the hand written 2 page letter, Ramquist talks about the importance of getting an education and learning a trade as well as conditions in Dawson City and surrounding area. One post card was sent from Bonanza Yukon on Dec 4, 03, to a Mr. Emil Holmberg, National Mine, Michigan from Ramquist. It shows a color litho picture of miners shooting the White Horse Rapids in the Yukon Territory. The other post card was sent to Ramquist after he had returned home by a fellow miner who had moved on to Iditarod Alaska in 1911. It is a photo litho card showing miners at Dome Creek Alaska saying hello and letting him know he is well. A 9 X 12 50 page souvenir soft cover book of photos of the Klondike. Ramquist has made many hand written comments throughout the book. A copy of an original photo of Ramquist back home in Michigan with his parents and siblings in which he is wearing the watch and chain.
