Item Details
Description
Romare Bearden (1911-1988) was an African American artist and writer known for his collage art and depictions of African American life. He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and grew up in Harlem, New York City.
Bearden's work often explored themes of African American identity and cultural heritage, and he was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement in the 1920s and 1930s that celebrated African American art and literature. He was also involved in the Civil Rights movement, and his work often addressed social and political issues affecting African Americans.
Bearden is perhaps best known for his collage art, which incorporated elements of painting, photography, and other media to create complex and layered images. He was inspired by a wide range of sources, including African masks, jazz music, and the work of other artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
Today, Bearden is considered one of the most important African American artists of the 20th century, and his work continues to inspire artists and scholars around the world.
