Description
Robert Capa was a Hungarian-born American photographer who is considered one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century. He was born Endre Friedmann on October 22, 1913, in Budapest, Hungary.
Capa is best known for his work covering the Spanish Civil War and World War II. He was one of the co-founders of Magnum Photos, a photographic cooperative that included other famous photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and George Rodger.
Capa's most famous photograph is "The Falling Soldier," which depicts a Republican soldier being shot and falling to his death during the Spanish Civil War. The authenticity of the photograph has been the subject of some controversy, but it remains an iconic image of the war.
Capa also photographed the D-Day landings in Normandy during World War II and was the only photographer to land with the first wave of troops. He captured some of the most powerful images of the invasion, but only a few of his photographs survived as his film was damaged in the processing.
Capa died on May 25, 1954, in Indochina (now Vietnam) while covering the First Indochina War for Life magazine. He stepped on a landmine and was killed instantly.
