Peter Beard (1938-2020) was an American artist, photographer, and writer who gained recognition for his unique style of photography that captured the wildlife and culture of Africa. He was born in New York City and grew up on the Upper East Side. After studying at Yale University, he moved to Kenya in the early 1960s, where he began photographing and documenting the wildlife and culture of Africa.
Beard's work often blended photography, collage, and journaling, creating unique and layered artworks. He became known for his striking images of African wildlife, as well as his portraits of famous figures such as Mick Jagger and Salvador Dali. He also documented the lives of the Maasai people and their traditional way of life.
Throughout his career, Beard was also known for his activism and advocacy for conservation efforts in Africa. He published several books, including "The End of the Game," which documented the decline of wildlife populations in Kenya, and "Zara's Tales," a collection of stories and photographs about a young elephant that he rescued.
Peter Beard passed away on April 19, 2020, at the age of 82.
