Description
Maxfield Parrish Daybreak, House of Art, NY, original litho & frame. Lithograph is well preserved under antique glass; minor wear; frame is in good condition too. Date Range: 1920s Signed in print, The artist’s name is also printed on the face of the image. Radiant and romantic, the well-known image of two women poised on a luminous veranda just before sunrise features the saturated hues and art nouveau neoclassical style that made Parrish famous. The two figures in the piece are the artist’s daughter, Jean (standing), and Kitty Owen, granddaughter of American populist orator William Jennings Bryan. Master of what is called the Golden Age of Illustration, Parrish inspired a generation of artists and illustrators in the early 20th century. In 1933, he famously announced that he was “done painting girls on rocks” and made an effort to redirect his artistic ambitions. But the allure of diaphanous frocks limned with the airy stillness of his gorgeous settings proved difficult to disavow. A century later, the inspired artistry in the evocative glimpses of his imaginary world make him unforgettable. Framed Size 34” x 22” Opening 29 ¼” x 17 ¼”
