Comprising: 1) Kawakame Sumio, 1895-1972, author and illustrator; MEIJI SHONEN KAIKO, a children's book reflecting life in wartime (Tokyo: Meiji Bijutsu Kenkyujo, 1944) 12mo, limp printed cover, dust jacket; and 2) Motokiyo Zeami, trans. into a screenplay by Meredith Weatherby & Bruce Rogers, BIRDS OF SORROW, illus. by Munakata Shiko, 1903-1975 (Tokyo: Obunsha, 1947) 8 1/4 x 5 3/4 in., in traditional Japanese fukurotoji binding with color woodcut cover by Munakata, with an archival style card stock folding case.
Provenance: From the Estate of Lionel Katzoff (1936-2022) longtime Baltimore resident and collector of Japanese art. Mr. Katzoff's collection of hand-printed Japanese books was the subject of an exhibition, "Gathering Jewels," at the Walters Art Museum in 2004. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Walters.
