Description
Untitled, Signed Alston lower right, Oil on Canvas, 24" x 24", Wood Frame. Note: Alston was a prominent African-American artist and educator at the Arts Student League of New York. He considered himself an artist without racial boundaries. In 1969 he had a retrospective at the Gallery of Modern Art and in 1971, he declined to participate in an exhibition of Black Artists, stating that he would prefer to being referred to as an artist, not a black artist. His contribution to conceptual and abstract painting was created during a time when social and racial forces where shaping America.
