Description
Anna Francis Simpson (1880-1930, Newcomb College), Squat Baluster Vase, 1918, with relief floral decoration around the top, the underside with a Newcomb cypher, "IL2", an impressed "AFS" signature, and "JM," for Joseph Meyer, Potter, H.- 2 5/8 in., Dia.- 3 1/4 in.
Condition
Condition is consistent with age and use. There is a small chip to glaze on the bottom portion of the vase. There is very faint craquelure visible to glaze along the bottom of vase, as well as inside and along the interior of the rim. There are approximately 4 firing flaws concentrated around the same area, just below some of the foliage design, and a fifth closer to the top rim. To the right of this, there is a flaw to glaze with a small dot of discoloration. This is a very handsome example of Newcomb and has been well preserved for over 100 years, even with the chip at the bottom.
