A large, hand thrown vase by American ceramics artist Sara Young (1922 -?) circa 1970. Brown earthen body with green mottled glazed upper body, with interesting, modernest, nearly spherical shape that grades to a small mouth on top. Size 10 1/2 in. tall, signed on the base "SYoung". Very good overall condition. One small rough spot along edge of mouth lip. Sara Young studied at the School of American Crafts, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY between 1947-1951. She then moved to Clinton, Tennessee in 1951 and established the Eagle Bend Pottery, where she was the principle potter and owner. She also co-founded the "Twelve Designer Craftsmen", Gatlinburg, Tennessee (1964-1978). She was known for wheel thrown pottery but produced some slab built pieces as well. Her designs were functional and decorative ceramics. She drew much of her inspiration from nature which was often evident in her earth-toned opaque glazes. She typically signed her pieces as either "Sara Young" or "SYoung", or simply "Eagle Bend Pottery". She was active up until 1992.
