Item Details
Description
The hand painted scene is exceptional well done by a master china painter. He depicts a scene of Neptune holding his trident riding the waves on a three sea-horse drawn chariot. A small cherub sits on the chariot blowing into a seashell horn. The detail of the characters are so fine it's hard to believe it is hand painted. Each delicate stroke using different shades of paint create these magnificent images. On the back of this piece is painted two words " Quos Ego" which means " Whom I ". This phrase is in Virgil's Aeneid , uttered by Neptune in threat to the disobedient and rebellious winds. Neptune was naturally regarded as the chief patron and tutelary deity of the seafaring Greeks. To him they addressed their prayers before entering on a voyage, and to him they brought their offerings in gratitude for their safe return from the perils of the deep. When he strikes the sea with his trident, the symbol of his sovereignty, the waves rise with violence, as a word or look from him suffices to allay the fiercest tempest. THE horses of Neptune are favorite subjects in ancient poetry and art in the triumphs and processions of the marine deities, drawing the chariot of the sea-god in its progress through the waves. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Manufacturing anomalies may exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.; Brothers Henri (decorator) and Antoine (modeller) Balleroy were from a family of Limoges porcelain painters. In 1901 Henri joined a Limoges porcelain factory in partnership with Mavaleix and Mandavy. In 1908 Henri left, joined with Antoine, and took a temporary location; then in 1912 H.A. Balleroy Freres took over a Limoges factory established in 1860.; Balleroy Freres produced mainly decorative pieces of high quality and tablewares. Henri closed the factory in 1937.; Backstamp: impressed B & Cie in rectangle ~ handwritten Quos Ego; Measures: 12" W x 1 ¾" H
