Description

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An enticing pottery figure of a nude hunchback depicted seated with arms folded over his knees with the spikes of his spine protruding down the prominent curve of his back. Suggestive of heightened status, his headdress is adorned with 3 feathers while lines of rings embellish the edges of his ears. His evocative visage presents squinting eyes beneath straight brows, a sizable nose, and a just-barely open mouth, as though letting out a great sigh. Hunchback and dwarf individuals were apparently beloved by the Colima - indeed, they heavily outnumber portrayals of women (and some have theorized that this relates to their relatively high social status in the society). Some scholars attribute the hunched back in West Mexican shaft tomb culture to a particular form of tuberculosis. Size: 5.5" W x 8.8" H (14 cm x 22.4 cm)
