Born in Philadelphia in 1915, Benjamin Eisenstat was educated at the Fleisher Art Memorial, The Barnes Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After serving in World War II he returned to Philadelphia with a portfolio of paintings and drawings and began a fifty-five year career in art during which he had 32 solo exhibitions and participated in group shows at the National Academy, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the American Watercolor Society, The New York Society of Illustrators, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum and the Chicago Art Institute, among others.Mr. Eisenstat's expressionistic landscapes received high praise throughout his career. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Fleisher Art Memorial, the Woodmere Museum, the New Britain Museum, the US Maritime Commission, the Brandywine River Museum, the US Army Museum Division, the James Michener Art Museum, and the New York Society of Illustrators. Mr. Eisenstat was a three-time recipient of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' Harrison Morris Prize and was awarded the Thornton Oakley Prize and the Medal of Achievement from the Philadelphia Watercolor Club where he was a member for fifty-one years.Illustration and writing were also outlets for his creative energies. His articles about the Philadelphia area were a feature of the Philadelphia Inquirer's "Today" magazine for close to twenty years. He also contributed paintings to publications for the Ford Motor Company, and Christian Herald magazine. His cartoons appeared in the New York Times book review section and the Saturday Review of Literature. He contributed travel articles to the New York Times, and Coming Events in Britain, and wrote for Graphis magazine, Step-by-Step Graphics and numerous other publications on the history of American illustration.Known for his quick wit and kind regard for students, Mr. Eisenstat was a popular instructor in Philadelphia art schools, teaching classes at the Fleisher Art Memorial, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and for 40 years at Philadelphia's University of the Arts where he taught drawing, painting and illustration, served as the chair of the Illustration Program in the 1970s, and retired as a professor emeritus. Many of his students went on the distinctive careers in the arts and were a great source of pride for him over the years. Mr. Eisenstat died on August 15, 2001, at the age of 86.
