Rare 19th Century Pennsylvania Artist Clarence Day Rudy 1875 Pennsylvania Landscape Oil Painting Signed. Oil on Board by Clarence Day Rudy; dated 1976; SLR; 10 1/2 x 16 1/2; 14 1/2 x 20 1/2;
Clarence Day Rudy was born in 1854 in Easton, Pennsylvania and died in harrisburg in 1919.
Known as C. Day Rudy, he was an artist and also owned a stained glass company. He became famous for his beautiful religious paintings and intricate stained glass work in area church windows. His father, Joseph was listed as a painter in the 1850 census. His brother, Alvin was a fresco painter. In the 1870 census, Clarence & Alvin are enrolled at the Solder's Orphan's School in Mt Joy, Lancaster County. This is also documented in the widow's pension their mother, Mary A. Lessig Rudy, received. His mother's burial site has finally been located, due to finding statements in the widow's pension documenting her address, in later years, in Saylorsburg, Monroe County, PA. Her father and mother are buried nearby in Scotia and will be linked to her.Clarence began working, at age 16, to help support his family, after the death of his father during the Civil War.
