Description
Tom Bianchi (1945-) was an American photographer and LGBTQ+ activist. He was known for his photographs of male nudes and his documentation of gay culture in the United States during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Bianchi was born in 1945 in the suburbs of Chicago and received his law degree from Northwestern University before deciding to pursue photography full-time. He moved to New York City in the 1970s and became involved in the gay rights movement, serving as the director of advocacy for the Gay Men's Health Crisis. Bianchi's photography often featured intimate portraits of male models, sometimes in provocative poses, and his work was celebrated for its raw sensuality and honesty. He also captured the LGBTQ+ community during the height of the AIDS epidemic, documenting the toll it took on the community and the activism that arose as a result. Bianchi published numerous books throughout his career, including """"""""Fire Island Pines: Polaroids 1975-1983,Tom Bianchi: 63 E 9th Street: NYC Polaroids 1975-1983,"""""""" and """"""""Tom Bianchi: Fire Island 79."""""""" His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide and is held in the permanent collections of many prominent institutions. Tom Bianchi passed away on March 30, 2022, at the age of 76.
