Description
Lucien Clergue (1934-2014) was a French photographer known for his black-and-white images of the Camargue region in southern France. Born in Arles, France, Clergue began taking photographs at a young age and became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2006. He is best known for his photographs of the Camargue, a wetland area famous for its white horses and pink flamingos. Clergue's images of the Camargue often featured dramatic contrasts between light and shadow, and he was known for his use of grainy textures and close-up shots. In addition to his work in the Camargue, Clergue also photographed bullfighting, nudes, and portraits. His photographs have been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications, and he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 2007.
