Item Details
Description
Unlike the flatweaves of the various Shahsavan tribes, their pile rugs have been little studied. The design of this very pretty rug woven in vibrant colours from soft pile wool brings to mind Shirvan carpets, but uses well-known motifs in a different context. Five star-shaped medallions largely fill the midnight blue field. The free spaces along the sides contain diagonal mirrored cruciform motifs within white squares. A number of small animals are scattered across the ground. The stars seen in the two secondary borders are a typical Shahsavan design. The fact that the back of the rug shows heavy abrasion can be considered a certain indication of age. â€â€œ Expertly restored in places, very well preserved considering its age.
