Description
late 19th century, 227 x 110 cm, Central Asia, North East Uzbekistan
The white field of this very long prayer rug is almost completely filled by a tree of life with V-shaped branches pointing upwards. The triangular arch at the upper end of the field and the two design bands resembling columns that border the sides of the field are crowned with large double hooks. A wide white border of stepped polygons, stars and pairs of triangles only flanks the sides. Coarsely woven in a specific dark palette, the rug is probably the work of a Karakalpak tribal group in Uzbekistan. An Ersari prayer rug served as the model. â€â€œ Signs of age and wear, a number of old repairs and repiled areas. Original finishes all around.
