Item Details
Description
Lot of 3 Roman Glass Pieces 4a. Yellow Glass Drop Pendant with Loop, 4th - 6th AD. Simple Drop Pendant with Loop, Yellow Glass, Great Patina, Roman, 4th-6th AD, 8x13mm, Intact. Reference: Maud Spaer Ancient Glass in the Israel Museum: Beads and Other Small Objects #420-422, Eisen figure 227 and plate 131. Provenance: Time Machine Mark Reid, (11/07/2013) Black Glass Pendant, African Bust, 2nd half of 2nd C - 1st half of 1st C BC. Pendant, African Bust, Black Glass, 2nd half of 2nd C - 1st half of 1st C BC, 13mm, poor form. Reference: Maud Spaer Ancient Glass in the Israel Museum: Beads and Other Small Objects: “The head of a Negroid youth with prominent cheekbones and brows, a broad nose, protruding mouth with full lips, tightly curled hair, and a long neck; originally both had a loop on top.” “The Negroid head is remarkable for the mere fact that so many identical pieces are known. The features are detailed and delicate; the color is almost always reported as purple (or violet). In all likelihood, this particular pendant type emanates from one and the same workshop. Another possibility is that the molds stem from a single source.”
Reference: Spaer examples 325-6, Corning Roman Glass Volume 3 #989 & 990, Borowski GR-7a-d (pg 285), Constable-Maxwell #188, Toledo Early Ancient 645a and b, Freer 60, Louvre 3 #45-47 and 177 on necklace (listing it as Punic production and excavated at Utica), Wolkenberg 124 (part of group lot), 4c. Tiny Glass Juglet, 9th - 10th Century AD, Translucent with interior iridescence. Islamic, 9th-10th C CE, 20mm, minor chips. Provenance: Hadassa Antiques Gallery (2nd Avenue NYC)
