Description
Window reliquary; 18th century.
Silver in its colour, glass and wax.
It is in a good state of preservation.
Measurements: 7 x 5,1 x 1,4 cm.
Window reliquary with Agnus of Clement XI, that is to say a reliquary that houses a wax plate printed with a devotional image that has been blessed and consecrated by the Pope, in this case Clement XI. The piece, which can be used as a pendant, has a silver frame with rhythmically repeating incisions in the central area and a delicately finished filigree on the outer perimeter. On the inside, the work has a wax composite finish with a reproduction of the figure of the Agnus Dei or Lamb of God on an altar, while the back has several figures whose definition is not completely clear, although it seems to be a representation of the Holy Family.
Reliquaries of this type were very common from the Gothic period onwards, used to contain relics of saints. It should be remembered, however, that at that time virtually anything that had been in contact with the saint or his mortal remains (cloths, burial soil, etc.) was considered to be a holy relic. The best examples were made of precious metals.
