William Ellery 3rd Person Signed 1772 Receipt of Payment
An autograph document signed in the third person by William Ellery. 1 small slip, measuring 3.75" x 3.875", Newport, Rhode Island, dated October 7, 1772. A payment note on behalf of Nicholas P. Tillinghart, reading: "Received…of William Ellery Twelve pounds 18/ in full of all Accounts and Demands In behalf of Nicholas P. Tillinghart." Signed below by "James Tillinghart."Along with another record of payment reading "Received (Newport Oct. 2d, 1772) One Pound eighteen Shill. And five Pence half Penny Lawful Money in full of all accounts", signed by David Hopkins. With slightly uneven edges and minor edge toning. Faint foxing. Boldly signed.
William Ellery (1727-1820) was a Rhode Island representative and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He graduated from Harvard College and worked as a merchant and a customs collector before taking up a law practice in 1770. He then became an active member of the Rhode Island Sons of Liberty, and in 1776, when stateman Samuel Ward died, Ellery replaced him at the Continental Congress.
