Item Details

Description

An antique cast brass inkwell stand writers desk produced in the style of the Middle American Victorian Period. A replica of the inkstand used by President Abraham Lincoln in the summer of 1862 to draft a presidential order that would become the Emancipation Proclamation. Features dual central inkwells, each having hinged top with figural winged lion gryphon finial, and repousse cameo face around bowl. Rectangular platform with Baroque high relief repousse designs, and ornate opposing long necked swan or serpent head handles to ends, surmounting four curling foliate leaf form feet. Includes two glass inkwell liners. The original is held in the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. No apparent maker marks.

Dimensions: 5 X 13.75 X 8.25 in.

Condition: Good overall condition having mild to average surface wear and patina. Estate fresh to the market.
