DESCRIPTION: "Rydie & Sport". Thomas Sully (American, 1783-1872). Oil on canvas. Monogrammed "TS" and "1852" on back. In wood frame with mounted light. Thomas Sully was a prolific painter and is regarded as one of the most influential American portrait artists of the 19th Century. His works spanned over seventy years and comprise over two thousand known pieces, many of which are on permanent display in galleries across the United States, including the National Gallery of Art. PROVENANCE: Per Consignor: The painting came into the family through her father's brother, Uncle Paul Murray's wife Jeanne Lawrence Stewart Murray's great great grandmother of Philadelphia. See photos of Jeanne Lawrence and aunt Betty Stewart with Sully painting, c. 1956. The label in the photograph was attached to the reverse of the painting. Please also see Lot 140, Elizabeth Stewart Needle Point Sampler, also from the Stewart Family. MEASUREMENTS: 18-7/8" wide x 22-3/4" high; frame 2-1/2" wide. CONDITION: Some superficial wear and chipping to paint on frame, primarily along the edges and corners. Some spotting and wear to back of canvas.
