Description
CARLETON WATKINS, “The Merced Group from Sentinel Dome, Yosemite”. 8 x12 inch albumen print. On the Verso there is a stamp of “J. J. Cook Successor to C. E. Watkins, 25 Montgomery St. S.F” After he bank crash of 1874 Cook and I.W. Taber acquired the contents of Watkins’ studio, including glass negatives. Taber published some of Watkins’ material under his own name, but was also a major photographer himself. Cook’s name will sometimes appear on Watkins stereo views, but it is extremely rare on a print. He doesn’t seem to have had success with his own photographs. This was printed from a Watkins negative, but it is not known whether by Watkins or Cook. There is a slight wave to the top of the print. Also included in this lot is: Watkins, “Vernal and Nevada Pass from Glacier Point.” 8 x 11 ¼ inch albumen print from glass negative, ca. 1867. There is a Stamp on the verso for “J. J. Cook Successor to C.E. Watkins, 25 Montgomery St. S.F. “Title in pencil on verso. Both have a slight waviness on the top. There are two prints in this lot.
