A color woodblock after Utagawa Kunisada, 1786 to 1865, a Japanese ukiyo-e artist considered the most commercially successful artist of the era. The print depicts a kabuki actor as a samurai with wagasa umbrella. Titled Actor Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Gosho no Gorozo. Dated 1864. Kabuki is a classical form of Japanese theatre, mixing dramatic performance with traditional dance that originated during the early Edo period. Gosho no Gorozo is an act of a six act play written by Kawatake Mokuami titled The Gallants Kimono Dyed with the Soga Pattern.
