This is an excellent 19th Century beaded Indian hide large doll from the Northern Arapaho Native American Indians from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The large doll exhibits an Indian brain tanned construction with trade canvas body. The top of the doll shows real human hair on trade clothe with period 19th Century glass trade seed bead facial features done in cobalt and red white hearts being sinew sewn. The doll itself is both sinew and trade thread sewn. The dress is a thicker Indian tanned hide with yellow and green mineral pigment ocher paint with beaded yoke in glass trade seed beads in colors of light blue, greasy yellow, cobalt, chalk white and red white hearts. The dress has wonderful hide fringes. The bottom shows Indian brain tanned buckskin hide high top moccasins with sinew sewn beadwork in colors of greasy yellow, light blue, cobalt and red white heart as well. The moccasins are covered in yellow mineral pigment ocher and has a slight cracking and stiffness to the hide. The dress itself has a slightly stiff but mostly supple hide. The doll has an original collection museum tag marked, "#16 1890 Northern Arapaho". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Measures overall 15"H by 10"W.
