For your consideration is this set of three fossilized pine cones from the Patagonia Argentina area from the Jurrasic era around 180 million years ago. One of the oldest and most powerful tree species still existing on Earth is the Araucaria genus. The A. mirabilis was a coniferous evergreen that was widespread in the Americas during the Jurassic period. It is the ancestor of the contemporary monkey-puzzle tree and Norfolk pine. The tallest fossil specimen known to science is 500 feet tall, which is high enough to even evade the long necks of the enormous sauropods that leisurely grazed these pine forests, removing the bark off the lower branches and feeding on the cones with their nutrient-rich seeds. Two of the fossil pine cones show orange and white colors with polished faces. The outsides of the pine cones show a rocky brown/orange color. The third pine cone in this collection shows a darker color and a nice pine cone texture throughout. It is slightly larger than the other two and shows nice detail throughout the pine cone. All three pinecones show good condition with no signs of obvious damage. The two smaller ones measure 2 5/16" L x 1 13/16" W, while the larger one measures a top diameter of 2" and a height of 2".
