Description
The lot features an original steatite carved elbow pipe from the Eastern Plains Native American Indians dating to the mid-19th Century from the Sundog Bruce VanLandingham collection. The piece shows an elbow pipe pattern with rounded tube like pipe bowl stem with a slightly tilted bowl which is larger in diameter and tapers out slightly. Beneath the stem area is a small keel or fin. The pipe has a dark black to charcoal coloring with slight speckled finish of almost yellow and small metal inclusion on one side. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and acquired by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Measures 3”L by 2”H by 3/4”W.
