Item Details
Description
Included in this lot is the First Edition of, "Recollections of Charley Russell", by Frank Linderman, with drawings by Charley Russell. Edited by H. G. Merriam, 1963, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, Oklahoma. The book recounts the life and times of Charles Russell, famed Western artist from Great Falls, Montana. Linderman and Russell were close friends and kindred spirits, and Linderman obviously recognized that Russell was not only an enormously talented artist but also a very uncommon man. The intimate, human memories regarding Charles M. Russell, his genius and eccentricities, which Frank Linderman set down shortly after the death of his good friend, constitute a miscellany of personal insights for which any of Russell’s biographers ought to have given his eyeteeth. But in none of the increasingly frequent Russell commentaries, apparently, has use ever been made of these prime source materials. The recollections are random and full of nostalgia. Frank Bird Linderman (1869-1938) was a Montana writer, politician, Native American advocate and ethnographer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he went West as a young man and became enamored of life on the Montana frontier. While working as a trapper for several years, he lived with the Salish and Blackfeet tribes, learning their cultures. He became known by the Crow as "Sign-talker", or, sometimes "Great Sign-talker". The Blackfeet called him Iron Tooth, the Kootenai knew him as Bird-Singer, and the Cree and Chippewa called him Glasses or Sings-like-a-bird. This blue clothbound stamped gold gilt hardcover is in very nice condition.
