Description
***Auction Highlight*** 859 'French Head of Liberty' Judd-241, Pollock-297 Pattern Half Dollar 50c Graded pr63+ BY SEGS. James Longacre's so-called "French Head of Liberty" design for the half dollar. It is uncertain where the "French Head" name came from, as the portrait is obviously modeled after the Apollo Belvedere in Rome. The reverse displays 50 CENTS encompassed by a cereal wreath that is very similar to that introduced on the issued 1860 Seated dime, although much larger in scale. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Both silver and copper examples were struck with from this die pairing. It is believed that around 50 silver examples exist today. This is an all-brilliant example with good depth of reflectivity in the fields and thick mint frost over the devices A Key Date's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away Coin
