Edward Borein (1872 - 1945) "The Phantom Bull"
A first edition of "The Phantom Bull" by Charles Perkins, illustrated by Edward Borein, by Houghton Mifflin Company, 1932. 70 pages with dust jacket. The book is 10 - 1/4" x 7 - 1/2", the full leather "book" case measures 11" x 8 - 1/2" x 1 - 1/4". The original front fly leaf is missing.
This is a rare book on its own, but this edition is enhanced and contains multiple pencil sketches throughout, along with unique hand-colored additions to the printed book illustrations, all done by Edward Borein himself.
The additional Borein works hand added to the book are:
Page 5, cowboy roping a steer;
Page 9, horse;
Page 11, mounted cowboy;
Page 20, 21, two (2) printed illustrations fully hand colored;
Page 28, a completed horsehead with initials E.B.;
Page 35, a Native woman riding with a travois;
Page 41, a standing Native man with blanket;
Page 52, Native portrait.
Arbor Day "Two Cent" stamp (1932) on title page and 5-cent Olympiad Los Angeles stamp on the last page.
Includes a Harold Davidson letter.
