Rey (September 15, 1898-August 26, 1977), along with his wife Margret Rey, were children's book authors and illustrators, best known for their Curious George series. Hans (born Hans Augusto Reyersbach in Hamburg, Germany) and Margret met in Brazil, where Hans was a businessman and Margret was fleeing Nazism. They married in 1935 and moved to Paris that same year. Book series on Curious George: While in Paris, Hans's animal drawings caught the attention of a French publisher, who commissioned him to write a children's book. The result, Cecily G. and the nine monkeys (“Cecily G. and the nine monkeys”), is little remembered today, but one of its characters, an adorable and mischievous monkey named Curious George (“Curious George”) , was such a success that the couple considered writing a book just about it. His work was interrupted with the outbreak of World War II. Since they were Jews, the Reyes decided to flee Paris before the Nazis seized power in the city. Hans built two bicycles, and they fled on them only a few hours before the city fell. Among the few possessions they took with them was the illustrated manuscript of Curious George. The odyssey they undertook took them to the Spanish border, where they bought tickets to Lisbon (Portugal). From there they returned to Brazil, where they had met five years earlier, but this time they continued to New York. The books were published by Houghton Mifflin in 1941. Hans and Margret had originally planned to use watercolor illustrations, but because they were responsible for color separation, they decided to change them to cartoonish images, which continued to appear in the rest of the books. Curious George was an instant hit, and the Reyes were commissioned to write more adventures of the mischievous monkey and his friend, the Man in the Yellow Hat. They wrote seven stories in all, with Hans primarily doing the illustrations and Margret doing more on the stories, though both admit to sharing the work and fully cooperating at every stage of development. Initially, however, Margret's name was excluded from the cover, ostensibly due to the fact that there was already a glut of women writing children's fiction. In later editions, this detail was corrected, and Margret now receives full credit for her role in developing the stories. The Reyes moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1963, to a house near Harvard Square. Hans lived there until his death. A children's bookstore called Curious George & Friends (formerly called Curious George Goes To Worldsworth) remains in business near the square. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Shipping: On completion of payment 5 CONTINENTS ART will help coordinate shipping.
