Description
Salor Main Carpet Fragment
310 x 183 cm (10' 2" x 6')
Turkmenistan, 18th century
Condition: fragment, low pile in places, foundation partially visible, several holes and missing parts backed with fabric, clear signs of use, scattered small repairs
Published: „Gewebt and geknüpft V, die Pracht der Saloren", Georg Butterweck, 2013, plate 36
Warp: wool, weft: wool, pile: wool with silk highlights
This stately Salor main carpet was first exhibited by Gallery Kailash, Antwerp, at TEFAF Maastricht in March 1988, when the two fragments were vertically joined to form a very narrow carpet. Its current conservati on correctly suggests that a column of gulli göls is missing, as all other Salor carpets of similar proportion typically feature a 5 x 10 arrangement in their fields. This carpet displays a classic form of the Salor gulli göl, with animals in the centre of the gül arranged in mirror image along both the vertical and horizontal axes, as well as small rhomboid forms.
The use of fewer güls to decorate the field allows for a complete and clear depiction of the field and enables these gulli göls to be appreciated as an archetype of this type. It is interesting to note how the height of the güls slightly increases as one ascends the field. The bright, fresh red of the ground is particularly noteworthy.
