Description
Headpiece board mask, Pende
H: 48 cm (1' 7")
Congo, mid 20th century
Shield-shaped board masks of the Pende are rare but interesting. They were worn horizontally on the head, as the typical wear marks on the inside show. The head represents a hybrid creature with tube-shaped eyes, a nose protruding from the forehead, and a sharply angled open mouth. Two different horns emerge above the forehead. Remnants of a reddish color cover parts of the mask. These types of masks are usually closely associated with forest spirits and relate to the request for success in hunting.
Published in the book: "DIE SAMMLUNG Gerhard F. Vesely", page 212
Provenance: Pierre Thomas, Belgium
