Description
John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851) title page from the "Birds of America" Bien Edition, New York 1858-1860, chromolithograph on double elephant folio sheets. This edition was reissued by the artist's son J.W. Audubon with chromolithographs of J.J. Audubon's original drawings produced through a collaboration with artist/printer Julius Bien (American, 1826-1909) and was published by Roe Lockwood & Son, NY in 1860. With the beginning of the Civil War in the US the production of this edition was halted and the consensus is that fewer than seventy folios were completed. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC.
