Stehende Frauenfiguren sind in Westafrika häufige anzutreffen und ihre Symbolik bzw. ihre Aufgaben werden mannigfaltig interpretiert.

In der matrilinearen Gesellschaft der Akan zählen Selbstsicherheit, Grazie, Gelassenheit, Würde, Stabilität, Ausgeglichenheit und viele andere Qualitäten zu den Eigenschaften die eine Frau auszeichnen soll. Nebst dem steht die Frau aufrecht auf dem Boden, mit dem sie kraftschöpfend verwurzelt ist.

Mit dem zentralen Thema der Mutterschaft eng verbunden sind die Ernährung, die Familie sowie das Fortbestehen des Clans oder des Staates. Vorliegende Skulptur wurde in diesem Zusammenhang wohl in einem Schrein rituell verehrt und beopfert.
