MILITARY COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE FILE OF SPECIAL AGENT WARD P. LANIER
MILITARY COUNTER-INTELLIGENCE FILE OF SPECIAL AGENT WARD P. LANIER
Item Details
Description
Fascinating file of personal documents and war-date reports of Ward P. Lanier, Special Agent, 507th CIC Detachment, 7th Armored Division, about 60pp. in all. Lanier received extensive CIC training, as evidenced by a 4pp. listing of his classes which included every kind of espionage, weapons handling and investigation one could imagine. Also present is his FBI fingerprint card, Bronze Star citation for service under fire during the Battle of the Bulge, Purple Heart citation for a wound at the same battle with related documents, letters of commendation (one for capturing a deserter and imposter), certificate of service showing points earned, etc. Of special interest are the documents Lanier generated, and those associated with his service. Included is: a 8pp.document issued by the Third Army setting forth the duties of the Counter Intelligence Corps; 2pp. interrogation questionnaire in German; his Oct. 18, 1944 report on a Dutch resistance member's description of the location of minefields and artillery positions; a Nov. 21, 1944 circular on recognizing suspicious Germán civilian activity; a Dec.31, 1942 report on sabotage at a bomb manufacturing plant; his May 8, 1943 report on the wreck of an aircraft en route to pick up Gen. U.S. Grant III; a Dec. 6, 1944 document anticipating the desertion of a German soldier or officer; a 2pp. Feb. 24, 1943 description of a West Virginia derailment citing no evidence of sabotage; and much more. Most of the reports are marked 'CONFIDENTIAL'. SOLD WITH: a 5pp. 4to. Oct. 2, 1943 report on potential C-I-C agent Cpl.Chester R. Hubbard (1905-2004). A great insight into the care taken in selecting agents, with a thorough examination given of Hubbard's personality, family background, education, employment, military experience, addresses, organizations joined, friends and references, credit, police record, etc.
