Their purpose was to promote camaraderie and fraternal fellowship among the members of the veterans of the Spanish American War. A large grouping of M.O.S. items, some very rare, all once the property Missouri veteran Pvt. Arnold Meyer of St. Louis. Included in the group is an especially rare fraternal cap, handmade, constructed of green felt with the emblem of the organization at front consisting of a triangle, a serpent, and various symbols. Another hand-colored serpent is seen along the top of the cap, its head jutting just over the peak, and various rank and title abbreviations and the year '1937' are sewn to the front. A purple tassel is affixed to the rear. Also included is: a 16 x 12 in. cotton handkerchief with printed serpent and 'St. Louis, Mo.'; booklet entitled 'Ritual of the Military Order of the Serpent', Xenia, Ohio, 1909, 28pp. 8vo., setting forth rules and procedures for meetings, members, etc.; six medals from 'convocations' held by the organization at locations throughout the U.S., most in the 1930s; a U.S. Veterans Bureau ID card issued to Meyer in 1928; a 4.5 x 3 in. photo of soldiers loading a cannon; and a United Spanish War Veterans resolution recognizing Meyer's service following his burial on Sep. 24, 1938 at Jefferson Barracks, Mo.
