Description
(1838-1916) Confederate brigadier general most noted for his role in his brother-in-law John H. Morgan's raid into Union territory to draw forces away from Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Good content war-date A.L.S., 3pp.4to., ‘Head Quarters, Cavalry Forces East Tennessee, New Market, Nov. 21, 1864. In part: ‘...The troops of my command are encamped at present near this place. My brigade on the left of the road, and one of the brigades of General Vaughn’s command on the right, and both on a line about one-half a mile from town, in front. The remainder are encamped immediately in rear of town on the hills...Col. Napier commanding the pickets last night...reports that this morning...the enemy commenced firing with their artillery upon College Hill...The videttes skirmishing with them fell back to the base...the enemy advanced no farther than the hill this side of the bridge...Having learned that a number of this company passed this place and gone in the direction of Morristown, and fearing that others may do so, and as I dislike detaching any portion of my command to go to the rear after those already gone, and stop others, I would respectfully ask that the General would order such guards of dismounted men on the road as he might think sufficient to prevent this...I have again received a summons for more witnesses to appear before the military court at Abingdon, among them Maj. Weber...I wish to know whether the General wishes that they should be ordered to Abingdon...’ Signed at the conclusion, adding rank as brigadier general. Toned with water stains on the last page, hardly intruding on the signature. Overall, very good.
