Description
(1828 - 1903) Confederate brigadier general, who made failed attempts during and after the Civil War to get Maryland to secede. He was among the officers with Robert E. Lee during the surrender at Appomattox. War-date A.E.S. on the verso of a partly-printed D.S., 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], March 23, 1865. The document grants private Andrew Bowers a furlough from March 13, 1865 to April 13, 1865. The second page a ‘Certificate of Disability for Furlough’ explaining that Private Bowers of the Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company 29 needs a 30 day furlough as he is unfit for duty due to illness. Steuart signs his approval on the verso as brigadier general. Also signing his approval is MONTGOMERY D. CORSE (1816-1895) Confederate brigadier general who participated in the Peninsula and Maryland Campaigns commanded George Pickett's brigade at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Light chipping, else very good.
