ANDREW JOHNSON
Item Details
Description
(1808 - 1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Rare partly-printed D.S. 'Andrew Johnson', 1p. 8 x 2.75 in., a check engrossed in another hand drawn on the People's Bank of Knoxville, Sep. 16, 1872, making a $250.00 payment to 'Ramage & Co.' A two-cent revenue stamp affixed at upper-left. Two tiny spindle holes with no paper loss, a few light vertical folds, else near fine condition. Ramage & Co. were dealers of books and stationery. In 1872, there was a special election for an at-large congressional seat for Tennessee; Johnson initially sought the Democratic nomination, but when he saw that it would go to former Confederate general Benjamin F. Cheatham, he decided to run as an independent. The former president was defeated, finishing third, but the split in the Democratic Party defeated Cheatham in favor of an old Johnson Unionist ally, Horace Maynard. Three years later, Johnson would return to the U.S. Senate.
