Description
(1795 - 1849) Eleventh President of the United States who led the country during the Mexican-American War, and secured the territories of Oregon and Washington. Rare partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. sm. folio, Washington, Jan. 19, 1848, the promotion of George H. Terrett to the rank of Captain in the Marine Corps, completed on the vignetted form used for appointments in the Navy. Boldly signed in full at conclusion, co-signed by Secretary of the Navy JOHN Y. MASON (1799–1859). Folds, otherwise in immaculate condition, beautifully matted with black cloth with silver fillets, set into a carved black wood frame. Terrett would command a battalion of Marines which took part in the Battle of Mexico City on September 13, 1847. Changing his allegiance, from 1861 to 1865 Terrett served as a major and colonel in the Confederate Marine Corps and was captured on Apr. 5, 1865.
