Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A set of 9 cast leaded-brass and bronze weights in the form of stylized zoomorphic creatures standing atop bases. Most are birds (karaweik and hintah) with crested heads, but one is a mythical animal known as a "toe" with hooved feet and a feline's head (these details are rubbed and nearly indiscernible). Animal-shaped weights were a charming tool used to weigh not just opium but any item that needed to be weighed - food, raw materials, and metals. After the British occupied Burma in 1885, they introduced flat, round iron weights that replaced these whimsical bronze examples. Size: 1.5" Diameter x 2.5" H (3.8 cm x 6.4 cm)
