Description
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba or Hemba peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A prestige axe known as a kibiki or a kasolwa, with a forged-iron blade fitted into a thin slit atop a carved wooden handle. Prestige axes like this example are an instantly recognizable symbol of authority and power, and wielding one was more akin to holding a scepter than a weapon, the person would wear the axe with the blade resting over their shoulder to indicate rank. The axe also symbolized metaphors such as "clearing a field or path" when carried during political discussion or times demanding leadership. Size: 8.3" L x 1.3" W x 14.5" H (21.1 cm x 3.3 cm x 36.8 cm); 14.75" H (37.5 cm) on included custom stand.
