Description
This example of Edison's Class M phonograph by the North American Phonograph Company is a truly historic piece in its large later style impressive oak cabinet having its original finish in good condition with some minor marks and scrapes. Left side of the cabinet near the front is separating with some shrinkage with a bit of wood missing. Cabinet has its original swarf and accessory drawers both of which have their porcelain knobs. This machine is equipped with the standard speaker having two styli which is used to record and playback. Carriage is also equipped with a shaving attachment. Carriage and mandril move freely. The upper mechanism and bed plate have their original black paint and pinstripes in good condition with a few minor chips and scrapes as well as some minor wear on the pinstripes. See photos. There are 3 nickel plated ID tags all in good condition, two of which bear the words North American Phonograph Company as well as patent information, and the third with the words Class M. The governor assembly with its start and stop lever, speed control and compound drive mechanism and pullies are all in good condition and operate freely. The governor has all its original straps and weights all of which are in good original condition with some minor wear and oxidation. The electric terminals have all their original knurled knobs. Also included is an original speaking tube with its original braided flexible hose which is in average condition with some fraying and wear. This accessory can be used both for recording and playback. In addition, there is a stethoscope style listening outfit with its ear pieces, rubber hose and fitting which attaches to the reproducer. This fitting is also equipped with a knurled volume control knob. Metal parts have their original black paint with some wear. The rubber tubing is a bit stiff but in average condition. Other accessories include a swarf brush, oil can, several small screwdrivers, 2 small Edison grease jars, etc. Also there are two cloth covered power cords that are old and frayed and for display purposes only. See photos. The massive electric motor is complete and in good working order. Also included is a home-built battery eliminator which is housed in a vintage wooden box. This allows the DC electric motor to be operated without the use of a battery. As with all old electric devices we recommend caution. It needs to be checked out. In addition to the battery eliminator there is an original Edison-Lalande lead acid battery with its original stoneware jar and lid. The jar still contains its original lead plates which are old and corroded. There is also a small oak box containing 8 original Edison glass battery oil bottles all of which are in good condition. See photos. Also included are several pamphlets, brochures and instructions for this phonograph. Cabinet measures 20" X 10" X 6" T. A truly historic good honest piece from the Wayne Wolf Collection.
