Item Details
Description
This piece, as per the catalog of the exhibition, was formerly displayed at Tibet House in New York City as c.2nd century A.D. as a bronze Uddiyana Buddha (early central Asian) modeled in the round seated on a lotus flower, hands held in a teaching mudra, with detailing to the hair, face, garments, and floral base. It weighs 520 grams, 13.5 cm high (5 1/4 in."). Acquired 1996 by Dr. Paul Singer, New Jersey, USA. from the Buckingham Collection , from the late Nik Douglas (1944-2012), renowned author, curator, and Asian art expert. Accompanied by a copy of Nik Douglas's collection cataloging document, with a note with the price (US$43,000). I was in touch with the auction house that helped disperse Part of this collection and asked them why these pieces were sold through a smaller auction house and not through one of the major auction houses given what they were, and they said that Nick Douglas strongly disliked the major auction houses based on several experiences he had in his later life, so he directed his (Now Widow, Living in the Caribbean), To use only smaller venues to disperse his remaining collection. Please see the photos to see these documents. I have a photo of the cover of the exhibition catalog there as well. This type of piece is outside my usual area of expertise as it is so early-I purchased the 3 pieces largely on the reputation of Nick Douglas and the reputation of the Buckingham collection and of the Tibet House. I also knew of Dr. Paul Singer and the famous collection he had put together in New Jersey (there is one amazing photo on the web of his den, with statues stuffed onto shelves). Also, this piece, out of the 3, has the most detail, and beauty. I am selling for a fraction of what this piece is worth if it is what it is claimed to be. I have some questions due to patina, though Items like this rare piece is impossible to put into a box as it has such interesting provenance and its age is unknown. The patina does raise questions (thus the reduced price). Please study the photos closely and decide for yourself.
