One of the leading South Texas artists working in the Western and cowboy genres in recent years, Donald Yena is known for his detailed and dramatic scenes of the old West. A typical piece might include a group of mounted outlaws rampaging through a dusty pioneer town, with many details that Yena includes based on his extensive research of the time period. Yena also produces quieter landscape scenes, often with native animals such as buffalo or horses. Born in 1933, Yena has lived and worked in the San Antonio area for most of his career, and his works are represented in important private collections, and have been honored with major exhibits in prestigious banks and museums including the Witte Museum in San Antonio. In 2022 Yena created the Donald and Louise Yena Spanish Colonial Collection at the Alamo, consisting of more than 400 Spanish mission-era tools, weapons and other artifacts he and his wife have collected over the years.
