THOMAS D. & SHERMAN BOARDMAN AMERICAN PEWTER FOUR-PIECE TANKARD AND PLATE SET, comprising a pair of tankards with hinged lids and a pair of 9" D plates, including a typed 1954 letter by Edith S. Howell (Mrs. Cleves H. Howell, Jr.) as told by Mrs. Cleves H. Howell, Sr. (Sara May Hill Howell) regarding the reported history of this "Pewter Communion Set", which states as being saved from a church by the Canby family in Keokuk, Iowa. Each with "TD&SB" maker's mark for the partnership of brothers Thomas Danforth Boardman (1784-1873) and Sherman Boardman (1787-1861) of Hartford, Connecticut. 1810-1830 along with other touchmarks, plates having American eagle and shield touchmarks. One tankard 8" HOA, 6 3/8" H rim.
Catalogue Note: Cleves Harrison Howell, who was born on August 13, 1880 in Keokuk, Iowa to parents Harrison Scott Howell (1830-1909) and Lucy Singleton Taylor (1838-1906). His maternal grandfather and grandmother were William Henry Harrison Taylor (1813-1894) and Anna Tuthill Harrison Taylor (1813-1865). Through his grandmother, Cleves was the great-grandson of William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), who served as the 9th U.S. President for 32 days before his death. Through his grandfather and grandmother, he was also the great great-/ great great great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison (1726-1791), who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and served as the Governor of Virginia amongst other political offices.

Descended in the family of Governor of Virginia Benjamin Harrison V and U.S. President William Henry Harrison.
Obtained by Florence Hill, the aunt of Cleves H. Howell, Jr., from the estate of Mrs. Canby.

Condition

Very good overall condition with some wear and surface scratches, minor nicks and denting, tankards with lids possibly having solder repairs at terminal of hinge.
